Eight wins more than satisfactory for most schools, but according to Sid Boyd’s “Green Record Book” dating back to 1909 only one AHS team had a poorer record (1937-38). In his 52-year history this was only the seventh losing team. They lost nine road games, but won six games at McDowell. It was, also, the first year for the Cardinal Conference. Capt. Bob Sweet led the Arrows with 310 points and 325 rebounds. The first-team All-CC player, also, set the all-time AHS record with 31-rebounds against Bellevue. John Rhoads (241 pts) and Jim Hipp (168 pts) made up the “Big Three” for the A’s. While eight of the first nine players graduated, the season again ended with a two-point loss to Mansfield, which had another losing record. It was Coach George Valentine’s seventh and final season. His record was 87-52, and he had the highest scoring teams in AHS history: two games over 100, eight games in the 90’s, and three 89 point games. He ran the three-pass fast break: outlet on the side, to mid-court, and to a backside trailer.
