Dick Messner, who made first-team All-Ohio as a junior, led Taylor’s Tots to the school record of 19 wins. En route to the District championship they set the Sandusky court record by scoring 72-points against Port Clinton. They won Ashland’s fifth Sweet 16 berth by winning the rubber game of the season against Mansfield in the final 20-seconds before 3,000 fans at Sandusky. Dick Messner’s steal and winning basket was one of the memorable plays in AHS basketball lore. The flu-ridden team lost to Findlay in the first game of Regional. Messner scored 327 points which pushed the career record past Ted Jacobs. Don Drebus (236 pts) was named honorable mention to the All-Ohio team. The other starters were Dave Burns (234 pts), Bob Harpster (78 pts), and Dick Cooper (99 pts). A crowd of over 200 attended the All-Sports banquet, which honored them and the other AHS teams.
