The A’s were the first AHS team to open the season with 11 straight wins. Also, while it was the last year for the NCO, they were the first team to go undefeated in the league since the home and home schedule started. They, also, won at Marion for the first time since 1937. Jim Zimmerman had the best game with 27-points against Galion, when he played his last game before entering the Navy. Freshman Dick Messner was the leading scorer with 161 points and first team All-NCO. Bob Miller, also 1st team NCO, was recognized on the 3rd team All-Ohio squad. Chuck Reese, the only returning starter, was 2nd All-NCO. Each member of cage squad was awarded the traditional gold ball for the NCO title. It was Coach Buckner’s final season. His record was 72-22 for a .766 percentage and three NCO titles and one State tournament team. |
